Resort Wear? Scarf collar top ... Burda 08-2012-122

I have just finished what was planned to be part of my resort wear 'collection', but I am a little meh on this one...

It is Burda 08-2012-122, another I was surprised not to find a review on.  Maybe I know why now?? *sigh*

My first surprise on tracing this pattern was to see how long it is.  They call it a top, I think a tunic would be a closer description... my husband calls it a smock.... does that give you some idea where this is going...

OK some photos to show what I mean...

This isn't even as long as they would have you make it.  I shortened it my 'usual' amount of about 4cm as I am not as tall as a Burda standard height.  I also made a size 38 top and took it out to a size 40 at the hips.  (Just the same as my blue linen top)

Most of the photos in the magazine show the top tucked...

Now that looks more like the one in the magazine...

Untucked the proportions are all wrong for me (I think).  The top cuts me right in half.

I would be interested to hear your ideas, but I do think I will be shortening this top by quite a bit.  At least it will be easier to tuck without all that fabric!

For anyone interested in making this top, my only other area of concern was the armhole width as I don't have slim arms... in fact in the magazine shot it looks tight on the slim-biceped Burda model!  The instructions have you finish the binding on the armhole before sewing the side seam.  I did this and then ended up unpicking the binding, making the armhole larger and re-binding.

The fabric is (I think) a silk cotton blend bought in the good old days when we had a Gardams in town. A lovely fabric and the only reason I persisted with this top...

I have a pair of shorts to show you and I am being rather over hopeful thinking I may get one more top done before I go away.  Ciao!

  1. Tucked in, it looks gorgeous especially with those pants.

  2. It's a 'tucker' definitely - love the colours and the surprise drape on the back...J

  3. It is a shame you are meh on this. I think it looks great tucked in but also very nice as a tunic. Love the fabric and would be a nice floaty top on a hot day.

  4. I agree looks very good with it tucked and I think it would look ok out if it was shorter with some little slits in the side seam. I love the look at the back and with the pants looks like a nice outfit.. at least you see the nice detail on the pants.

  5. I don't know. I tend to like it both ways. In thinking "resort" I like it out, but what about pairing with some skinny legged cropped pants. I can just see you walking around a resort area in your easy breezy top with that tie flowing down the back.

  6. Tucked in for sure! The one third/two thirds ratio is more flattering than the half/half ratio created when it is worn as a tunic. Also, tucked in shows off the lovely long back tie. Cotton/silk is one of my favorite blends!

  7. It definitely needs to be shortened, the tunic is not a good look, too full, that pattern is slightly a-line and no shape at all, no wonder your DH calls it a smock. As a top it looks lovely and I do really like that back tie/drape.

  9. I love the top. And the pants. Those are Burda too, right?

  10. Such a lovely fabric, looks pretty on you. Tucked in is a very good look on you. If you want to wear it untucked, I would add some waist shaping and side slits as mentioned above, as well as shorten. Alternatively, if you like a blousy look, you could shorten and add elastic at the bottom hem.

  11. I was planning on making this top for my SWAP and now I'm not so sure. I love the fabric you've used and tucked in looks great, so perhaps shortening will see you wear it more. I just made another Burda top that has you bind the armhole before sewing the side seam. I don't think I'll do it again. I can see how it's easier to apply the binding but it creates other problems. I'm glad you posted this today, I was going to trace this pattern tonight.

  12. I like it, particularly ticked in. Have you tried it untucked over straight legs pants or a short straight skirt? That long back scarf is so glamorous.

  13. I agree with everyone else. The top looks great tucked in to those fabulous pants. Wearing it that way also accentuates the long tie at the back. It's definitely a winner for evening cocktails.

  14. Hey Sue,

very nice top:) I'll shorten it too, to where the slit starts now and make a new one, not as deep as the original. Kind of like it more untucked.

  15. I like it both ways! That fabric is gorgeous, too. Perfect for this top. I've had this one on my to-do list- I might need to bump it up to the top now!

  16. Sue, I like the longer look on you as well as the tucked in. The longer look is svelte looking and the tucked in, more casual. I am a bit jealous that I wouldn't dare to tuck in!! The fabric is divine and colourings suit you very much. Great work on both the pants and the shorts. You are gathering quite a wardrobe! Di.

  17. I love it tucked in, it emphasises the scarf drape better that way too.
